IoT Projects, Articles & News - IoT Based Smart Parking System

Smart parking development implies an IoT-based system that transmits data via the free parking spaces to the web and / or mobile applications. IoT devices, including sensors and microcontrollers, are located around the parking lots.

Micro I / O has developed an intelligent parking system, shown in Figure 4, which is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The system is based on wireless magnetic sensors (Figure 5), which are used on each parking lot for occupancy detection on the ground. The smart parking system installed in Victoria's St. Francis Square includes a mobile app that can be activated to provide the user with traffic management features to help them see the available parking spaces and avoid unnecessary congestion in the area.

The smart mobility project comprises three main elements: its mobile application and monitoring centre, which works together to monitor, control, process and display parking information in real time for the driver. A novel sensor solution is the cornerstone of Smart Parking System to improve mobility of large and large vehicle fleets in cities : the Smart Vehicle Presence Sensor or SPIN (V in Spanish abbreviation). The SPIN sensor consists of a small single-board computer, distance sensors, cameras, LED indicators, buzzer and batteries that determine the status of the parking lot.

There are several domains of Smart Cities and Smart Parking is one of the most popular domains in these cities. The smart parking industry has seen a number of innovations including smart parking management systems, smart door control, smart cameras that detect vehicle type, automatic registration number plate recognition, smart payment system, smart access system, and many more. Intelligent parking helps drivers to find a parking space using information and communication technology [3].

A similar approach is being pursued today with intelligent parking solutions that use ultrasonic sensors to detect the presence of vehicles and trigger doors to open and close. We use Firebase IoT database for parking availability data. In an intelligent IoT parking system, we send data to a web server to check the availability of space and vehicles for parking.

The IoT-based parking system includes two IR sensors, two servomotors, an ultrasonic sensor and a 16x2 LCD. The IR sensors used at the entrance and exit gates detect the presence of cars to open and close the doors. The sensors detect cars and three IR sensors detect the availability of parking spaces.

Two servomotors are used to open and close the door according to the sensor values. The system has a mobile seat reservation application and ultrasonic sensors are placed on the ground and connected via Ethernet. We use the Adafruit platform shown above to publish data in the cloud and monitor the world.

This IoT-based weather reporting system provides a solution that uses temperature, humidity and rain sensors to monitor and report weather statistics. The system works by sending data from the microcontroller over WiFi and the Internet to a web server. It allows the user to set a threshold for a specific situation and to warn him with weather reports if someone exceeds it.

Many car parks introduce sensor-assisted lighting, which is triggered by traffic and pedestrians. Libelium, which has developed one of the most interoperable and scalable intelligent parking systems on the IoT market, provides its customers with intelligent lighting systems that measure ambient light in indoor and underground car parks and on the road through directional sensors. These systems save money and energy by dimming the light in low traffic times and enhancing safety by illuminating unlit areas when people pass by.

As urban areas in the future grow, smart parking is an emerging industry that is critical to the success of smart cities. With the advent of automated vehicles and the creation of infrastructure to accompany their development there is a desperate need for parking spaces. Regardless of the whereabouts or appearance of a car, parking accounts for 30% of city traffic and causes enormous fuel waste and associated carbon dioxide emissions.

Difficulties in finding a parking space are a major problem for users who want to park their car in crowded places. Nowadays it is very difficult to find a parking space in busy areas, especially if the system does not have any details about the availability of parking spaces. The old technique of searching for a parking space is manual: find a free space in an area itself.

With Nodemcu, we have built an IoT-based parking system with five IR sensors and two servomotors. The future development of automated parking systems will be to park the driver's car and return it when the driver returns. This will be a great convenience for processing payments and correcting changes when parking in parking structures where we do not have cash available.

The proposed architecture addresses the problems of traffic management and, in certain cases, open parking management, local dissemination of information and free parking for drivers. An efficient, intelligent parking system benefits drivers by shortening the time it takes to find a parking space, optimising parking capacity utilisation and increasing revenue for the city's car park operators. Drivers and commuters not only spend less time searching for parking spaces and looking for their cars, but also reduce the risk of damage to the vehicles of travellers who are willing to take this opportunity.

Users are informed live about the availability of parking spaces and choose the best one. The demand for available parking spaces will be dynamic, the value will be as it changes over time as needed. Information about the location and conditions of parking will be provided to the driver and passengers in the car in real time.

The IoT device consists of an ESP8266 microcontroller and an HC-SR04 distance sensor. In order to investigate the technology of this intelligent parking solution, we conducted an internal research project. This special solution uses MVP-POC as proof of concept.
