Until the United States did not prohibit Huawei from cooperating with Qualcomm, they had always been good business partners. Although Huawei's high-end mobile phones use self-developed Kirin processors, there are still many Qualcomm processors in medium and low-end products. Huawei will purchase 50 million US dollars of chips from Qualcomm every year. Huawei can be said to be a more important customer of Qualcomm. Guo Ping, Huawei's rotating chairman, said that "once it is licensed, Huawei is willing to use Qualcomm chips", which is more like a helpless move. After all, the United States does not have many choices for Huawei!
After September 15, the new law of the United States against Huawei officially came into force. Any company that uses technology from the United States must obtain the permission of the United States before cooperating with Huawei. What does that mean? Huawei will completely lose the road of chip self-development. Huawei Hisilicon Semiconductor Co., Ltd. is a chip R & D company. It does not have the ability to produce chips. It has been OEM by TSMC. After the promulgation of the US law, this will completely cut off the cooperative relationship between Huawei and TSMC. Even if domestic SMIC wants to continue OEM production for Huawei, it also needs to obtain the permission of the United States, otherwise it will face U.S. sanctions.
Huawei's self-development of chips has been blocked, so it can only get out of the current dilemma through external purchase. At present, the companies that can provide Huawei chips include apple, Samsung, Qualcomm and MediaTek. Among them, Apple's A-Series processor chips will not be sold to Huawei. After all, there are great differences in the operating systems between the two. Samsung Orion processor does not have a full network segment and is also not suitable for Huawei (Samsung mobile phones also use Qualcomm processor in China). Then, there is not much room for Huawei to choose, leaving only Qualcomm and MediaTek.Qualcomm has applied to relevant US government departments for approval to supply Huawei. After all, the gap of Huawei chips is very huge, which will be a large amount of revenue.
Before, the United States banned the cooperation between Qualcomm and Huawei. Will it be passed this time?
Personally, I think the probability of passing this time is high. The United States has found Huawei's "pain point". The reason why Huawei was banned from using Qualcomm chips earlier was nothing more than to crack down on Huawei, but the effect was not ideal, which led to losses for Qualcomm. If you want to limit Huawei's development in the field of chips, taking drastic measures is the key, and TSMC is Huawei's "seven inches"! The early restrictions can be regarded as Trump's emergency medical treatment, which will change after calming down. This can be seen from the approval of Intel and arm companies' application for Huawei's supply in the early stage. The United States does not want to prohibit Huawei from buying products, but just wants to completely cut off Huawei's road of self-research.
Not surprisingly, Huawei mobile phones may have a combination mode of Qualcomm and Hongmeng systems in the future. As for 5g chip, I don't know how to interpret it. Will Huawei give up and choose Qualcomm?
