I don't know if they cause underground corrosion per se but cast iron and steel pipes do corrode. Oxygen and water, and moist acidic soil will cause corrosion.

A small flaw in a protective coating on a pipe will enable corrosion that will eventually rust all the way through the pipe. This is still happening to old pipes today. When a long enough section of pipe deteriorates, it will be completely replaced with plastic pipe which lasts indefinitely.

Sometimes a plastic liner is added inside an old run of pipe if it is easier to line the pipe than dig it up and replace it. A liner might be used when repairing pipe that runs under a roadway so the road can remain intact
