Backlot Bicycles at Sony Pictures Studios

Besides the oohs and aahs of shooting with the remarkable new small form factor camera from Sony, it was watching the engine of filmmaking that struck me the most. I realized making movies is more like factory work, than whatever I was expecting. Im not sure what I expected, but I guessed it was glamorous, well-lit creatives being creative.

Backlot Bicycles at Sony Pictures Studios 1

At Stage 23 of the Sony Pictures Studio lot to try out the RX0 (its amazing, see my review here), I wandered around a bit. Peaked in a studio here and there, and remembered Close Encounters of the Third Kind nearly bankrupt Columbia Pictures, now located on the lot after Sony acquired them in the 80s. Columbia bet it all on that legendary movie 40 years ago.

Sony bet it all on mirrorless cameras too, about 4 years ago. What we were seeing now is the latest iteration of their technology and the most miniaturized. The other thing I noticed on the backlot was all the bicycles.

It makes sense because any mostly flat large area to traverse is perfect for their use; especially, when you can just hop on and off of them.I dont think Sony has any formal bike share designation, but like factories around the world, the bicycle is the most effective way to get from a to b and no matter what youre delivering. That includes hard goods, cameras, moving pictures, or you to work.

My fav is the chopper. I wonder what filmmakers have ridden that bike? RELATED QUESTION Which is the best bike mounting cameras available in the market?

Zero BZ1 Is an Arduino-Compatible Cortex-M0 Dev Board with a Built-in LiPo Charger and SD Card Modul
For several years after its release, Arduino was considered by many hackers to be akin to keeping the training wheels on your bicycle. Just flash the microcontroller and build your own circuit, they said. The idea being that it was slightly more affordable (in bulk) and more compact that sticking an entire Arduino development board into your project. Those naysayers have obviously been proven to be curmudgeons, but what would they think of adding a LiPo charger and SD card module to an Arm Cortex-M0 (ATSAMD21G18) microcontroller development board?Thats exactly what the Arduino-compatible Zero BZ1 does, and it just launched on Kickstarter. Before you go running away, consider that its actually not that bad of an idea. In the DIY electronics world, there is a definite move towards modular components that can be easily interfaced, and development boards that include everything and the kitchen sink. This is the latter. Its fairly affordable too just $18 on Kickstarter, which is comparable to other development boards, and you get the LiPo charger/regulator and the SD card capabilities as a bonus.Aside from those capabilities, its similar to boards like the Adafruit Feather M0. Youve got a decent number of pins, a 10-bit DAC, a real-time clock, and USB flashing. It has 32KB of SRAM, 256KB of flash memory, and even an onboard temperature sensor. The built-in LiPo circuit can be used to charge batteries via USB or from sources like a solar panel, and the SD card is accessible just like with an external module connected to an Arduino. That may be superfluous for some projects, but its affordable enough that its still practical. The Zero BZ1 Kickstarter campaign is running until January 14th. Early birds can snag a board for $14, and shipping is expected in March 2019 RELATED QUESTION Which is the best bike mounting cameras available in the market? Do DC Bicyclists Have a Death Wish?
Do DC Bicyclists Have a Death Wish?
In 2015, drivers racked up more than 60,000 red light camera violations in the District. However, now police are looking at Washington, DC bicyclists, who have triggered red light cameras 1,557 times between January of 2015 and April of 2016. Unfortunately, police have no way to identify bicyclists who run red lights, so many do not pay for a ticket and continue to violate this traffic law. There are some intersections in the district that have hundreds of bicyclist red light violations, including:Rhode Island Avenue and First Street NW, which had 276 violationsOak Street NW and 16th Street, which had 201 violationsK Street and 27th Street NW, which had 173 violationsBicyclists are more vulnerable than drivers and could sustain more serious injuries in a bicycle accident. However, they dont just endanger themselves when they run a red light. They also unintentionally put pedestrians and motorists who may try to avoid them in harms way. While it is true that the majority of traffic deaths are caused by cars, the bicycling community must still follow the laws that are in place to keep them and others safe. How to Navigate Safely Through Washington, DC on a BicycleAccording to the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, bicyclists must obey D.C. traffic laws. Some safe practices include:Wearing reflective gearNot wearing headphonesThough it is not a law, it is safer to ride with traffic, rather than against itAlways wearing a helmetYielding to pedestriansIn turn, drivers must check for cyclists when turning right across a bike lane. Additionally, it is illegal for drivers to park in bike lanes. Drivers should always check before opening their doors. It may seem minor, but dooring a passing bicyclist can still cause serious harm. This Wheel-Balanced Inverted Pendulum Is a Great Demonstration of Inertia
This Wheel-Balanced Inverted Pendulum Is a Great Demonstration of Inertia
For people who havent experienced it for themselves, its difficult to understand how a bicycle or motorcycle remains stable at high speeds. After all, theyd just fall over when standing still if it werent for the kickstand. But, the truth is that they become more stable at high speeds, and thats thanks to the gyroscopic effect caused by the inertia of the spinning wheels. Inertia can also be harnessed for another form of stability, like with this self-balancing inverted pendulum.Gonzalo Belascuen and Nahuel Aguilar from the Instituto Tecnolgico de Buenos Aires created the device to be presented at the IEEE ARGENCON 2018 in Argentina. Its an inverted pendulum, so the pivot point is at the base and the arm stands upright. When its not running, simple gravity takes over and it falls over. But, when its turned on, a motor spins a disk to generate inertia that counteracts gravity as the pendulum tips, and it remains upright. Its even stable enough to withstand strong lateral pushes. This works with a feedback loop similar to what youd find on a Segway or Hoverboard, except there is no ground traction to push on. Instead, the disks spin is precisely controlled with a microcontroller (what appears to be an Arduino Uno). From a resting position with no kinetic energy, the wheel begins spinning at high speed towards the center position. When the wheel is suddenly stopped, inertia takes over and the arm swings towards center. More subtle spin-and-brake movements are then used to keep it stable in the upright position, allowing it resist lateral pushes RELATED QUESTION Which is the best bike mounting cameras available in the market? How to Build a Mini Electric Bike From Plywood and Hobby Electronics
How to Build a Mini Electric Bike From Plywood and Hobby Electronics
If youre like most people, your first real mode of transportation was probably a bicycle. Bikes are great because theyre relatively quick, incredibly energy-efficient, and entry level models are dirt cheap. But, you do still have to pedal them, which kind of ruins the whole experience. If you want the benefits of a bike without having to pedal, why not follow YouTuber James Brutons lead and build a simple and inexpensive electric bike?Brutons design stands out because its probably as cheap as an electric bike could possibly be, but it still works well. All of the structural elements were designed in Autodesk Fusion 360, and then cut out from plywood on a small CNC router. If youre not lucky enough to own a CNC router, you could probably print some templates and do the routing by hand. The wheels are a pair of plastic casters, and the entire thing can be assembled with wood screws and glue.To make it all move, Bruton used a hobby brushless electric motor. Its bigger than what youd find on an average drone, but still small enough to be affordable. The motor gets its juice from a 24V LiPo battery paired with an open source SK8-ESC from Turnigy, which Bruton has used on previous electric skateboard projects. The finished bike is capable of getting up to 15mph by Brutons estimates, though battery life probably leaves something to be desired RELATED QUESTION Which is the best bike mounting cameras available in the market? Audio/video Search in 2019 Is Like Camera Phones in 1999
Audio/video Search in 2019 Is Like Camera Phones in 1999
eo EngineeringFollowFeb 22, 2019 2 min readA phone needs a camera like a fish needs a bicycle. It was 1999, and I remember this thought running through my mind upon seeing a news article that companies in Japan and South Korea were readying to launch camera phones. This was a time when film cameras were at the top of the food chain, and digital cameras were barely starting to get off the ground. And someone wanted to put cameras on phones? Thats as ridiculous as piscine-powered penny farthings.Except, of course, it wasnt. The subsequent massive investments in hardware miniaturization, software, and global supply chains led to the creation of digital camera modules that relentlessly became better/ faster/ cheaper year after year. Today, we routinely have phones that offer their cameras as their primary selling point (Exhibit A: the recent Phone X vs. Pixel 3 ads on billboards in the San Francisco Bay Area) and innovative AR/VR applications for mapping, gaming, and more being released almost daily. So how does this relate to audio & video search?Lets say you have hours of video or audio recordings, from depositions, training videos, subject matter expert interviews, or panel discussions. And you want to quickly retrieve information buried deep within those recordings for building a case, advancing research, or educating your team. Your current options are: (1) send individual recordings out to a transcription service; (2) ask someone to take notes; (3) rely on your memory. What if you want to connect the dots across things said in different recordings? What if those things were said in different languages by different people? What if the same person changed their story on what was being said over time?Thats where the ability to search video & audio recordings becomes powerful. At Threadeo, we believe that, just like cameras on phones, this is a foundational capability that enables several workflows that we have imagined and are building and many more that we havent. Stay tuned. [Authored by Aniket Sawant and cross-posted from our blog].(Photo by David Clode on Unsplash) RELATED QUESTION Which is the best bike mounting cameras available in the market? Remote Encounters: a Bicycle Tour From Patagonia to Peru
Remote Encounters: a Bicycle Tour From Patagonia to Peru
By Pia LeongMy boyfriend Jimmy and I love traveling by bicycle. In 2012, he made a series of films while cycling from Germany to Japan, so we decided to take the project to another continent: South America. Well be cycling through Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru, documenting the entire journey and meeting lots of locals along the way. Weve spent the last year learning basic Spanish, and gathering everything we need to make films on the road in the middle of nowhere: bicycles, spare bike parts and tools, camping gear, camera equipment and laptop, first aid kit, cooking stuff, navigation tools, warm clothes and now were finally ready to hit the road.Do we have what it takes to endure a 5,000 kilometer bike trek across four countries (not to mention the Andes Mountains)? Will we get by with beginners Spanish in the remotest corners of South America? I guess well find out!Part One: What They Dont Teach You In Spanish LessonsMeeting Marcedonio was such a treat and couldnt have come at a better time. We made a pit stop at his store on our way through a sparsely populated part of the Andes. Jimmy and I were immediately taken in by his big smile and shining eyes, and we knew that we wanted to get to know him better. In his presence, that initial fear of jumbling my words ran out the door. I relaxed, and we ended up having some great laughs together as he showed us how to bake bread. Looking back on that encounter, Im surprised how well we understood each other (considering the level of my Spanish). By relying on gestures and body language to fill in the gaps and by wanting to understand each other Marcedonio and I had a proper conversation. For the full post, click here.Part Two: Surprising Lessons From A New Learning EnvironmentIts mystifying to realize that only six weeks ago I was living the busy urban lifestyle in Berlin, and now I am watching the sun disappear behind a mountain, surrounded by the sounds of a forest in southern Chile. With the change of lifestyle, the way in which Im learning Spanish seems to be changing too.Using a textbook and going to Spanish class is very much part of a busy city lifestyle. You have to find the discipline in yourself to go to lessons, learn your vocabulary and practice the grammar you learnt the week before, so you dont embarrass yourself under the judging eyes of your teacher and co-pupils. The way I am starting to learn and use Spanish here in South America matches the nomadic life we are living right now. Jimmy and I never know what is around the next corner. We are constantly adapting to new situations: be it the nightly task of finding a suitable place to pitch the tent, figuring out an alternate route, or having to cook a meal in the vestibule during a surprise sandstorm. For the full post, click here. Part Three: How Exercise Can Put You In The Right Mindset For Language LearningWhen we spent a day with Aldo and his wife on their dairy farm, I was reminded how undemanding the locals are here in rural northwest Argentina. The high expectations to speak Spanish perfectly were coming from myself, not from them. So for our day on the farm I just let go. I felt very relaxed in the company of Aldos family, and spent most of the time laughing, not least when I failed at milking a cow. It felt healthy to laugh at myself, and I feel the same way about my Spanish; its important to be willing to make mistakes and get things wrong if you want to learn something new (I still need a few cow-milking lessons before I can say I have it down). The more willing I am to make mistakes, the more opportunities I have to practice and play with my learning. I get encouragement from these different interactions, and thats actually exciting and a bit of a revelation. For the full post, click here.Part Four: An Introverts Guide To Speaking A Foreign LanguageOn the upside, being a bit of an introvert also means that I take great pleasure in learning on my own. At this point, I have to make a little confession: Ive discovered that I really enjoy talking to myself! I like saying sentences out aloud, listening to the way the words sound, correcting the pronunciation and trying to hit the correct accents and emphases. I get this same satisfaction when speaking with the Babbel app and repeating sentences from my podcast Spanish lessons. Planning my sentences and speaking to myself give me the extra confidence I need to not feel intimidated speaking beginners Spanish to native speakers. When we met Coria, I used all of the above. I was excited about us having organized an interview with a local craftswoman, and enjoyed the process of learning new vocabulary specific to making hand-knitted clothing. I practiced my questions aloud until I felt confident and really started to look forward to finding out the answers. By the time we sat down to speak, it was no longer about me learning Spanish, but about Coria and her craft. I felt confident from the very beginning. For the full post, click here.Part Five: A Little Practice Equals Way More ConfidenceIn our experience, the people of the Andes are genuine and non-judgmental. We cycle into these little towns, dirty from the road, coming from a completely different culture and speaking our own version of Spanish. One might expect a bit of a culture clash, but its not like that at all. Their relaxed manner has rubbed off on us, and this makes communicating easier and more fun.For the full post, click here.Part Six: Journeys End: How Seven Months On The Road Changed MeWeve just arrived in Cusco, which marks the end of our journey. Weve seen so many beautiful places and met so many inspiring and welcoming people its almost too much to process. I feel like Ive learned a million things, but I wont know what they all are until Im confronted with city life again. But there are some obvious lessons that I will be taking away from this journey. RX1R II Barrel Distortion
RX1R II Barrel Distortion
Finding barrel distortion in a just released, heavily hyped new, high-end camera is like a fork shudder on a cross bike. Like shitty brakes on an aero road bike, or internal cable routing that affects the shifting. Its not a showstopper, but affects the functionality, and workflow. I didnt see it at first, until davidjschloss pointed it out. Take a look at the top of the Empire State Building. Havent been to NYC in a few years, but pretty sure that monument doesnt lean like the Tower of Pisa. Barrel distortion at the edges isnt unusual for a wide lens its often seen on zoom lenses and wide-angle lenses. Its a bit uncommon on a 35mm, which tends to be considered the wide edge of standard, but still standard. Its not something seen on the Sony Distagon 35mm f/1. 4Z lens, though sadly David didnt have that with him to directly compare the view.Barrel distortion is important because the lens on the camera is non-interchangeable, so anyone buying this camera to shoot landscapes or cityscapes is going to notice the issue. While usually correctable in software, its always preferable the lens not cause an issue in the first place; especially, on such a high-end camera. Sony surprised everyone with the RX1R II as I shared here, with first impressions, and finding barrel distortion is a buzzkill in a camera that may replace the A7R for even light travel.Im off to Maui with the camera later this week. Theres no pointy high rises in Maui, but plenty of sunsets, landscapes, and twisty roads to shoot; hopefully, without too much barrel distortion. Issue 20: a Funny Photography Story
Issue 20: a Funny Photography Story
Back in Maui for our annual family vacation, I brought the good camera one thats changed how I shoot and was looking for unique shots. Having photographed every ride, too many sunsets, and sunrises for over a decade I waited until the scene presented itself. Wasnt happy with the lava shots and a couple on-the-bike were good enough for Bike Huggers social channels and mag, but just not the moment I was after. Then as we celebrated New Years Eve on the beach, my wife says, Check out the fishermenwait till he walks into the scene, and boom. There it is! An instance with the beach, West Maui Mountains and Lahaina in the background, at sunset with good light, and with the subject looking on.In the viewfinder, I zoomed in to check the shot, and discover his thonged butt! Now, thats funny in itself, like an easter egg for the tourist photographer. Even funnier is a couple days before, that same thong punctuated a street scene after a very interesting day that included a mermaid spotting. So interesting, I wrote a vignette about it:After seeing a mermaid earlier on a ride, I watched three people staking a Tiki light into the ground while a guitar player strummed in the back of a truck and a sinewy old hippie with a long, white beard polished a 280z. Two steps from that scene, construction workers talked about their jobs and a muscular gymnast posed over his scooter, his butt up with a black thong prominently displayed. Thought he was the fittest woman Ive ever seen, for a few seconds. There he was again. This time not presenting as a muscular gymnast leaned over a scooter, instead a super-fit beach fisherman!Next year when we return to Maui, Ill ask around about the thonged fishermen get his story, I bet hes even more interesting than the landscape photograph he just happened to walked into.Im also committing to turning the camera away from the bike more in 15 and instead shooting where it takes me. A 3-Step Guide to Choosing Your next Camera
A 3-Step Guide to Choosing Your next Camera
With the rapid rate of advances in technology and photography gear, more and more people are getting enticed into purchasing a camera and trying out photography. Being very vocal about photography and my reflections about it (through this blog), I very often get asked the questions What camera should I buy? or Is this a good camera? or Is this a good brand? and so, heres a 3 step guide on finding out what camera is suitable for you. You will have to answer the questions on your own and do a bit of research on your own but this article should guide you in your camera-soul-mate searching. SELFWhy are you buying a camera? What do you intend to use it on? Where do you want your photos to end up? and Are you willing to commit to learning photography extensively?Im a travellerIf youre buying a camera because you travel a lot and you want good photos to post on social media and have minimal to moderate desire to learn photography, a good quality Point-and-Shoot camera is good enough for you. One with wifi and GPS function would be very much suitable.Im a traveller and I want to take good photos when I travelThe intention clearly demarcates the first two. It is really adviceable for people who travel a lot to get a good camera and learn photography. If you are willing to patiently learn the craft and eventually make large prints of your valued travel memories then a good mirrorless or DSLR camera would suit you well.Im a traveller but I think carrying a camera is such a choreStick to your smartphone. Youll never have the real desire to learn photography anyway. Just dont expect to have good quality, large format, photos to stare at when you finally sit your lazy ass down in your livingroomI like taking pictures and I am passionate about making artIf you think youll be able to stick to such a craft that entails a lot of learning, a lot of failure, a lot of expenses and a lot of frustration, then by all means, get a serious camera. Your budget is pretty much your limit but youre gonna be choosing between a DSLR or a Mirrorless Camera. Im a blogger, I only take pictures of myself and/or my clothes and I have no real desire to learn photographyRead the answer to the first one. Same goes for you. If therea bit of desire in you to learn, then an entry level mirrorless camera should do the job.Photography is my profession and I need to make good investmentsYou dont need to read this. Skip on to the next partsBrandBefore choosing your camera, it is good to narrow it down by choosing what camera brand you should choose. What camera brands have good presence and availability in my area? This is something people dont really take much into consideration but is very very important. Being able to purchase what you need, specially additional batteries, lenses and accesories right when you need them can be beneficial instead of having to order overseas and waiting for a long time. Which camera brand has the kind of lenses I need? Its sad to say but there are camera brands that have very good cameras but have a very limited lens line-up for their cameras. On the other hand, there are some that have good lens line-ups but the lenses are not that affordable. Compatibility of third-party lens brands (Tamron, Sigma, Tokina, etc) should also be considered. What direction is this camera brand going towards and it this parallel to the kind of photography I want to do?Camera brands create cameras that can be used by everyone in general but as you look deeper into how and why they develop their cameras and lenses, youll be able to see that certain brands make cameras for certain fields. There are brands that manufacture cameras that would have more edge in sports, events and other fast-paced kinds of shooting. On the other hand, there are brands that make cameras more suitable for travel, landscape and documentary photography who put emphasis on portability. There are also brands (and camera formats) that are best for commercial and advertising work.Which brand has good after-sales service and good service center reputation? This is the most important thing if you value every cent you spend. Choose a camera brand that has a functioning service center that has a reputation for fast turn-around time. Feeling secure that there are people who can fix your camera when it breaks really matters. Its a plus when they can do it quickly. Its best when your camera comes with a long enough warranty period. You can do your photography with such comfort and ease. CameraOnce youve chosen your camera brand and have determined why you want to buy a camera and your willingness to learn, you can then choose your specific camera. Only two questions and youll know what you want. How much budget do I have? This will pretty much narrow things down to an easier set of choices. You obviously cant go for a camera that you cant afford. Know what cameras are in your price range and proceed.Which camera is suitable for the kind of photography I do or plan to do?Brands dont just make cameras that vary in price. There are usually multiple lines or series that are made for varying kinds of workflow. A more expensive camera doesnt always mean that its better for the kind of photography you do. If you simply go for the more expensive one or the top of the line model, then you might end up over-spending for specs that you wont ever use. Hopefully, after this rather lengthy read and looking up what camera is what, youll be able to make a more knowledgeable purchase and maximize your future camera. Thanks for reading!*** for more free knowledge, follow me on medium via @niccovalenzuela and to see some of my work, follow me on instragram via @niccov.ph RELATED QUESTION Which is the best bike mounting cameras available in the market? Welcome to New Bike City
Welcome to New Bike City
The camera attached to the front rack of Paul Vogels bicycle has captured a lot since he strapped it on in 2014. Theres the miles of fresh green paint, hundreds of bollards and tree beds protecting new bike lanes, and the thousands of novice Citi Bikers who totter a bit as he rides by. There are also cavernous potholes, jutting construction plates, and enough cars parked in the bike lane to inspire a Twitter account (@D00rZ0ne) dedicated to documenting the infractions and infrastructure failures. This is the duality of New York City cycling in its teenage years: aspirational and awkward, confident and kind of a mess, packed with bike lanes that are innovative and imperfect. This is the duality of New York City cycling in its teenage years: aspirational and awkward, confident and kind of a mess, packed with bike lanes that are innovative and imperfect. With the help of activists like Paul Vogel, we are getting a clearer picture of how to build a more perfect bike lane. Meanwhile, Transportation Alternatives is keeping up the everyday fight for basic safety, accessibility and interconnectedness. Advocacy will guarantee bicyclings tomorrow and its backed by a bold vision for citywide bike share, side streets so calm you can ride down the middle, and a connected network of low-stress cycling routes that are easy to access. As for the future, bicyclings next age is predicted to be much more mature, free of tabloid hysteria, bike wars and maybe even red lights. There may not be hoverboards or flying bicycles, but we can see some advancements on the horizon that would make even George Jetson ditch his flying car. Will New Yorks most fantastical bike future come to pass? Our crystal ball shows a hearty yes, in part because the safer streets that TransAlt is fighting for today are driving some truly innovative ideas for the future.Mo Progress, Mo ProblemsIn a recent article, Vox reported that no one in the United States has died using bike share, even though systems have been launched in a whopping 94 cities since 2007. In New York, the average number of cyclist injuries and fatalities appears to be holding steady, despite the number of New Yorkers who ride a bike growing apace with hundreds of new bike share stations and miles of new protected bike lanes. Today, well over half a million of us hop on our bicycles several times a month and the number of daily bicycle commuters has doubled since the City of New York began installing protected bike lanes in 2008.Remarkably, this period of unprecedented growth coexists alongside an endless number of imperfections (a. k. a. the trash bags, construction workers and police cars in your bike lane), and is inspiring an unrelenting pace of research and development. Consider the machine alone: in 2016, companies are expected to release thousands of new bicycle models, including those that (1) can collapse to the size of an umbrella, (2) are constructed entirely of cardboard, and (3) fold into a self-contained bike lock. The end of the bike wars, it appears, is a boom time, too. Clear the PathRiding in New York can seem like a stop-and-go enterprise where your brakes get more exercise than your thighs, but a growing field of traffic technologists are looking to give cyclists the green light, and the next one, and the one after that, based on the simple premise that if bicycling is more efficient, more people will ride.Retiming signals to give cyclists the greenwave is just one possible future. Another is a technology used on rural roads that could easily be tucked into urban bike lanes: demand-actuated lights are triggered by a detector embedded in the asphalt, which responds to conductive materials a steel car, sure, but your aluminum bicycle rim will work, too and tells the traffic signal that someone is ready and waiting at the red. Transportation Alternatives also sees cameras, which New York City already employs to enforce bus lane, red light and speed violations, as a perfect future tool to clear a path for cyclists. Bike lane enforcement cameras arent in use anywhere in the U.S. yet, but the technology could someday dissuade drivers from using the bike lane like a parking lot. As the number of dedicated bike lanes grows, the scope of the problem becomes more apparent, and there is every reason to believe that technology will one day be a valuable tool to protect bicyclists, explains Charles Territo, Vice President of American Traffic Solutions, which supplies the citys current camera enforcement programs. Plus, cameras provide data, in this case about how bike lanes are used, and how effective they really are.Go Vroom? The single fastest-growing age group in New York City is people over 65, with the population of senior citizens expected to reach 1. 84 million by 2030 and these are just some of the New Yorkers who may lack the oomph required to get a bicycle started. Those older New Yorkers, along with residents of hilly neighborhoods and millions more, may soon be able to take a cue from eco-conscious car drivers. The adoption of electric bicycles is going to make cycling a more affordable, accessible, and realistic replacement for automobiles, offering mobility and freedom despite age, terrain, or physical ability. Electric bikes have two wheels, a small electric motor and top speeds of 20 mph, which federal laws regulate in the same category as human-powered bicycles. However, e-bikes are currently illegal in New York City, a fact that Marco Conner, TransAlts Legislative Director, is working to change during the 2016 legislative session. There is a bill currently in committee that would distinguish between safe electric bicycles and high-speed motorcycles and scooters, and bring New York State in line with federal law, explained Conner. By clarifying a little bit of language in the law, we can make it possible for so many more people to ride bikes.Bicycle builders are putting big design dollars into taking e-bikes beyond the simple models on the road today. Expect future e-bikes to feature sensors, lights and GPS built into the frame; even pace metrics and data could come right out of your bike. Solar companies are looking at space-efficient ways to power it all. Roadways built from photovoltaic cells are anticipated in the near future, taking advantage of wide open road space like, say, the Sheridan Expressway to generate electricity, which e-bikes could use to keep moving. If Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs Had a BabyFor many New Yorkers, commuting by bicycle can take twice as long as driving or taking the subway. Its not just that New York City is vast; highways and train lines save time by traveling over or under surface congestion to trace the most direct route between places. That efficiency doesnt transfer to the street grid that cyclists get stuck on. Until now.Introducing the bicycle speedway.A bicycle speedway is like a highway for bikes, providing a clear path between common places so cyclists can travel exactly as fast as they can pedal. In Germany, a dedicated bicycle speedway 60 miles long will soon mirror the autobahn, connecting 10 cities. London also announced it would build one to fight congestion inside city limits.Sarah Lawrence College Professor Amanda Schachter recently asked students in her urban design course to apply the bicycle speedway concept to some currently impossible New York City bicycle commutes, piggybacking their designs on existing infrastructure. One student routed bicyclists to Manhattan from Co-op City, with a few miles of bike paths built into the Cross Bronx Expressway and Pelham Bay Parkway. Another took riders into Manhattan from Far Rockaway along the tracks of the Long Island Rail Road.A lot of old infrastructure, like elevated subways and highways, was overdesigned. Why not use those lines and extra bits of right of way to make bike highways? said Schachter. If there was space for bicycles that was separate but followed the same route, there would be the possibility of bicycling from much more far-flung places.Rolling ForwardTransportation Alternatives thinks these big ideas and messy conditions are linked; forward-looking concepts are the magic ingredient for fixing the imperfect bike lanes and other discomforts of bicycling today. Issues like sloppy construction or drivers parked in the bike lane are deeply local, and often the fight for one block is a place where progress gets mired. But a focus on big ideas for cyclings citywide future can drive the pace of fixing the small stuff. For decades, the advocates for bicycling in New York were pothole-obsessed. Even the earliest incarnations of cycling clubs organized themselves to petition for better paved roads. Today, as we grow out of cyclings teenage years, we at Transportation Alternatives are keeping our sights on a broader horizon, pushing for innovative new ways to put more people on two wheels. And thanks to Paul Vogel, and thousands of TransAlt activists like him, were keeping an eye on the local ballet of the sidewalk, and streets, too. This is how we roll forward on our bicycles, of course.Photos by Konstantin Sergeyev.Article by Jessie Gray Singer RELATED QUESTION Which is the best bike mounting cameras available in the market?
